The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a species of semi-aquatic mammal large pinnipeds inhabiting the maresárticos. There are three subspecies: the Atlantic walrus, the Pacific and the Laptev Sea. The global population is estimated at walruses 250,000.
The walrus belongs to the order Carnivora.
Walruses can live up to 40 years. They feed in the water, diving to depths of 90 m, as they are able to stay half an hour underwater. They mainly feed on clams and other shellfish, but can also eat other invertebrates such as worms, gastropods, cephalopods and even some species of fish.
La morsa (Odobenus rosmarus) es una especie de mamífero pinnípedo semiacuático de gran tamaño que habita en los maresárticos. Existen tres subespecies: la morsa del Atlántico, la del Pacífico y la del mar de Láptev. La población mundial de morsas se calcula en unos 250.000 ejemplares.
Las morsas pueden llegar a vivir hasta 40 años. Se alimentan en el agua, buceando hasta profundidades de 90 m, ya que son capaces de permanecer media hora bajo el agua. Se alimentan fundamentalmente de almejas y otros moluscos, aunque pueden comer también otros invertebrados, como gusanos, gasterópodos, cefalópodos e incluso algunas especies de peces.
